This photograph shows a New York City firefighter opening high-pressure hoses at a street hydrant in July 1908, a scene that set the city's firefighting apart from many others of the period. The high-pressure water service was being built out in those years, and it delivered much stronger streams than the older steam pumpers could reach, which let crews fight fires on upper floors without relying on ladders alone. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a large group of news photographs taken in New York in the early twentieth century. The caption details are based on old, unverified records, so the exact location and occasion are not confirmed.
