Boys splash and swim off a dock at Rutgers Slip, a small inlet on the East River at the edge of Manhattan's crowded Lower East Side. Around 1908, many children in the tenement neighborhoods had few places to cool off, so the river's piers and slips were a common summer gathering spot despite the risks. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a large body of news photographs taken in New York in the early 1900s. The title and date come from old caption card data that has not been independently verified, but the scene fits the period's street life well.
