Two of the largest ocean liners of their day, the French *Normandie* and the British *Queen Mary*, sit side by side at a New York pier in this photograph, captioned for September 15, 1939. That was two weeks after Germany invaded Poland and Britain and France declared war, so the scene carries the uneasy weight of a port caught between peacetime crossings and wartime disruption. The *Normandie* remained in New York for years afterward and was later seized by the United States and converted for naval service. The date and location come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified, so the image is best read as a record of the waterfront in that season.
