Crowned royalty at a dance for older New Yorkers gives this portrait its unusual mix of pageantry and everyday life. Diane Arbus made it in 1970, when she was drawn to people at the edges of ordinary society and photographed the elderly and outsiders with a direct, unhurried gaze. This print was made in February 1973 by Neil Selkirk, who printed from Arbus's negatives after her death in 1971. Worth noticing is the tension between the paper crowns and formal clothes and the plain, candid faces beneath them, a tension that runs through much of her work.
