Rather than a street scene, this picture looks inside a New York tenement, where a plain shelf and the crowded contents of one room suggest how many families lived around 1905 to 1910. Reformers and photographers documented such interiors during those years to press for better light, air, and sanitation in the city's densely packed buildings. The state's Tenement House Act of 1901 was one response, setting rules for the construction of these dwellings. The record does not name the room's location or photographer, so it is best read as typical of its time.
