Broadway, the long diagonal avenue that runs the length of Manhattan, is the subject of this view, though the record does not say which stretch it shows or when it was made. The card associates the print with American Photo-Litho Co., a New York firm that worked in photolithography, a process that transferred photographic images onto printing plates for reproduction. Broadway began as a Native American trail and later became a colonial road, and by the late nineteenth century it was the city's busiest commercial and theater street, which made views of it popular with buyers.
