The Metropolitan Opera House at Broadway and 39th Street was the company's home for most of its early history, and this 1912 view shows the Broadway face of the building in the city's busiest theater district. The house opened in 1883 and was designed by the architect J. Cleveland Cady, whose work reflected the period's taste for grand, ornamented public halls. The photograph was copyrighted in November 1912 by Irving Underhill, a New York photographer whose street and building views document the city in the early twentieth century. The Metropolitan Opera later moved uptown to Lincoln Center, so this picture records a building that is no longer part of the city's opera life.
