The Metropolitan Opera House stood at Broadway and 39th Street, a grand 1883 building that housed the company until it moved to Lincoln Center in 1966. The record dates the photograph to about 1902 and credits Irving Underhill, a photographer who recorded New York street scenes in the early twentieth century. A caption tracing on the card also lists "Elev. RR," which may point to the elevated railway nearby, though the record itself flags that information as unverified. The contrast between the opera house's ornate design and the busy commercial streets around it is worth noticing.
