The Astor House stood on Broadway at Vesey Street, just north of City Hall Park, and for much of the nineteenth century it was one of New York's best-known hotels. The Astor family built it, and it opened in 1836 with a granite front and a reputation for fine dining and distinguished guests. Its position at the head of Broadway made it a landmark for travelers arriving by steamboat and stagecoach. The record gives no date for this print, so it is best read as a general view of the hotel's busy street front in its prime years, before it was demolished in 1913.
