On the evening of Thursday, May 10, 1849, a crowd gathered outside the Astor Place Opera House in lower Manhattan to protest a performance by the English actor William Charles Macready, whose rivalry with the American actor Edwin Forrest had grown into a public feud. The police could not hold back the crowd, and militia troops fired into it, killing more than 20 people. Nathaniel Currier published this hand-colored lithograph soon after, one of the quick news images that let a wide public follow the event.
