Few buildings in nineteenth-century New York were as ambitious as the Crystal Palace that rose on the site of today's Bryant Park for the Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations. Modeled on London's Great Exhibition building of 1851, its glass and iron structure opened in 1853 and drew crowds to displays of manufactured goods, machinery and art from around the world. The palace burned in 1858, but it remains a symbol of the city's effort to rival London and Paris as a center of industry and commerce.
