The Crystal Palace in New York was a glass-and-iron exhibition hall built in Bryant Park, on the site of what is now the New York Public Library's main branch, for the Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations, which opened in 1853. Modeled on Joseph Paxton's London Crystal Palace of 1851, it was the first world's fair held in the United States and was meant to show that American manufacturing could stand beside European industry. The building's vast glass dome and open iron framework made it a striking symbol of the era's faith in technology and progress, and it burned in 1858, ending its brief life as a public landmark.
