Inside the Palace of Fine Arts at the 1900 Paris Exposition, a rotunda held a display of small-scale statuary, and this view shows how the figures were arranged for visitors. The Exposition Universelle drew enormous crowds to the banks of the Seine that year, and new buildings such as the Grand Palais and Petit Palais were built to showcase painting and sculpture from many countries. The photograph is credited to William H. Rau, a Philadelphia photographer who produced and sold views of international expositions, which explains its straightforward, documentary approach.
