The Palace of Liberal Arts was one of the many exhibition halls raised for the Exposition Universelle of 1889 in Paris, a fair that marked the centennial of the French Revolution and drew millions of visitors. Its exhibits covered the arts, education, and the applied sciences, and the building reflected the period's enthusiasm for large-scale iron and glass construction. This albumen print, made with a process common in the 1880s that produced warm, slightly glossy tones, preserves the fair's architecture as contemporaries saw it. The fair's most famous landmark, the Eiffel Tower, was completed for the same event.
