A fountain named for the Coutan family stands in the grounds of the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris, with the Palace of Liberal Arts rising in the distance beyond it. The fair celebrated the centennial of the French Revolution and drew millions of visitors to the Champ de Mars and its surroundings, showcasing new engineering, electric lighting and the newly completed Eiffel Tower. This print is an albumen photograph, a process that was giving way to gelatin emulsions by the late 1880s, so its tonal range and surface sheen offer a useful glimpse of the technology of the period.
