Sculpture of Oedipus at Colonus, shown in the Palace of Fine Arts at the 1889 Paris Exposition, draws on Sophocles' last play, in which the aged, blinded king reaches a sacred grove outside Athens and finds his peace before death. Sculptors of the period often treated that moment with pathos. The fair, held to mark the centennial of the French Revolution, filled the Champ de Mars with national industry and art, and the newly built Eiffel Tower rose above it. This albumen print, made on paper coated with egg white, records the work as visitors saw it in the fine arts galleries.
