The Gallery Rapp, one of the galleries inside the Palace of Fine Arts on the Champ de Mars, is where this sculpture was displayed during the Exposition Universelle of 1889. That fair marked the centennial of the French Revolution and drew millions of visitors to Paris, and its art sections gave sculptors a major public showcase. Albumen prints were the standard photographic process of the 1880s, so the picture records how exhibition rooms were arranged and lit during the fair. Notice the placement of the figures and the spacing between them, which shows how organizers presented sculpture to the crowds.
