This view of an arts and crafts exhibit inside the Palace of Liberal Arts captures one corner of the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris. The fair marked the centennial of the French Revolution and drew millions of visitors who came to see industry, design, and the decorative arts from many countries. Albumen prints from the 1880s like this one preserve interiors and displays that visitors experienced only briefly, and they show how the fair presented handcraft as part of national and industrial progress.
