The entrance to the furniture section of the Palace of Diverse Industries, one of the many halls built for the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris, is the detail that sets this view apart from the fair's better-known landmarks. The 1889 fair, held to mark the centennial of the French Revolution, drew millions of visitors to the Champ de Mars and the Trocadéro, and its exhibition halls showcased manufactured goods, decorative arts and new industrial design. Albumen prints like this one, made in the 1880s, were a common way to document such interiors, recording the crowds, the displays and the architecture for trade and later reference.
