Garments set out for public view fill the interior of the Palace of Diverse Industries at the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris. The fair marked the centennial of the French Revolution and drew millions of visitors to the Champ de Mars, where the Eiffel Tower served as its centerpiece. Displays like this one showed how France's clothing and textile makers presented their goods to shoppers and trade buyers. The albumen print process, common through the 1880s, gives the scene its soft tonal range and fine detail.
