Among the many national displays at the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris, this view records the Romanian exhibit, where woven textiles and other decorative objects were arranged for fairgoers on the Champ de Mars. The exposition marked the centennial of the French Revolution and drew tens of millions of visitors, giving emerging nations a chance to show their crafts beside those of the major industrial powers. Romania, which had declared itself a kingdom in 1881, used the fair to present its artisanship to a European audience. The albumen print preserves the dense, layered arrangement typical of these exhibition displays.
