Few views of the 1889 Paris fair show its interiors as clearly as this one, which looks up into the central dome, with its displays of art and ceramic vases arranged beneath the vault. The exposition was held to mark the centennial of the French Revolution, and it drew crowds from around the world to pavilions filled with manufactured goods, decorative arts and fine art. Albumen prints like this one were the standard photographic process of the 1880s, so the image also documents the technology of its day. The sweeping roofline and crowded floor make clear how the fair's architecture was meant to impress visitors as much as its exhibits did.
