The fountain in this 1889 view is the work of the sculptor Jules Coutan, and the photograph frames it against the great central dome of the exhibition grounds. The Exposition Universelle opened that year in Paris to mark the centennial of the French Revolution, and it drew millions of visitors to the Champ de Mars. Albumen prints like this one were the standard photographic process of the 1880s, so the image also records how fairgoers and planners presented the city's new monuments to the world.
