Portugal's pavilion at left, a food products building at right, and the Eiffel Tower rising behind them put a national pavilion and the tower in one frame. The Exposition Universelle marked the centennial of the French Revolution, and the iron tower, built as the fair's showpiece, was new and drew large crowds. Tourist boats on the Seine in the foreground hint at how the riverbanks served as a busy approach to the grounds.
