Taken from an arched balcony of the Eiffel Tower, this view looks out over Paris during the Exposition universelle of 1889. Gustave Eiffel's iron tower was built for the centennial of the French Revolution and was the tallest structure in the world when it opened that spring, drawing visitors to the fair on the Champ de Mars below. The date here is a bracketed estimate, but the print belongs to the Tissandier Collection, which preserves photographs from the late nineteenth century.
