A worker stands beside a large wheel in this view of the machinery believed to raise the elevator inside the Eiffel Tower, a detail that sets it apart from the many pictures of the tower's iron lattice. It was likely taken during the 1889 Exposition Universelle, when the tower was new and its lifts drew crowds of their own. The photograph is attributed to Napoleon Dufeu, a Paris photographer, and comes from the Albert Tissandier collection. Its date is recorded only as sometime between 1887 and 1889, so the exact moment remains uncertain.
