The steps leading up to the first stage of the Eiffel Tower are the focus here, a view of the approach to the structure at the 1889 Exposition universelle in Paris. Gustave Eiffel's engineering firm built the tower as the centerpiece of the fair, which marked the centennial of the French Revolution, and visitors paid to climb its open iron framework. This print belongs to the Tissandier Collection, a group of photographs from the period. Its caption card is an older, unverified record, so the exact vantage point is worth checking against other sources.
