This albumen print shows a building erected for the Ministry of War at the Exposition Universelle of 1889, the Paris fair held on the Champ de Mars to mark the centenary of the French Revolution. Government ministries and private firms alike built pavilions along the fairgrounds, and the military exhibit gave the state a chance to show its power in a setting that drew millions of visitors. The print also records the look of the fair's architecture, which was crowded with pavilions and fountains in the shadow of the newly completed Eiffel Tower. Albumen paper, made by coating sheets with egg white and silver salts, was the standard photographic printing method of the 1880s.
