Among the many halls raised for the Exposition universelle of 1889, this one belonged to France's Ministry of Public Works, the state agency responsible for roads, bridges, canals and railways. The fair opened in May 1889 to mark the centenary of the French Revolution and drew millions of visitors to the Champ de Mars, where the Eiffel Tower served as its best-known landmark. Ministries and private firms used such pavilions to show engineering, construction methods and public works projects to a global audience. This albumen print, made in the 1880s, preserves the look of that exhibition architecture before most of the site was taken down.
