The subject here is the Guatemala pavilion at the Exposition Universelle of 1889, the Paris world's fair that marked the centennial of the French Revolution and drew millions of visitors. Like many of the national pavilions in that exhibition, it presented its country to an international audience through architecture, displays, and the goods it hoped to sell, and coffee was among Guatemala's most important exports at the time. This albumen print, made in the 1880s, shows how the fair's buildings were recorded in the period. Albumen paper, coated with egg white and silver salts, gave these photographs their fine detail and warm tone.
