Among the many national pavilions at the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris, this one represents the Dominican Republic, a Caribbean nation presenting itself to European visitors alongside much larger industrial powers. The fair, held from May to October 1889 to mark the centennial of the French Revolution, was anchored by the newly completed Eiffel Tower, and its national buildings let participating countries display their products, crafts and ambitions to millions of visitors. This albumen print, made in the years when the process was standard for photographs of the fair, shows the building in the warm brown tones typical of the medium.
