This photograph documents the Bolivian national pavilion at the Exposition Universelle of 1889, one of many foreign display buildings erected across the Champ de Mars and nearby grounds in Paris. The fair marked the centenary of the French Revolution and drew millions of visitors, and national pavilions like this one showed each country's industries, crafts and trade to an international audience. The print is an albumen print, a process that coated paper with egg white and was widely used through the 1880s, so its tonal range and surface reflect the photographic methods of the period.
