A passenger train and its station stand on the Esplanade des Invalides in this view, with the Pavilion of Algeria in sight beyond them. The Exposition Universelle of 1889, held in Paris to mark the centennial of the French Revolution, drew millions of visitors and spread its colonial exhibits across several sites, with the North African pavilions among the attractions. Albumen prints were the standard photographic process of the 1880s, which accounts for the fine detail and warm brown tones. The rail line and the crowds show how the grounds moved people between pavilions.
