Where many views of the 1889 fair focus on towers and facades, this one steps inside the Pavilion of Mexico to look up a staircase lined with exhibits. The Exposition Universelle, held in Paris that year to mark the centennial of the French Revolution, invited nations to build their own pavilions and show off their industry, crafts and goods. Albumen prints like this one were the dominant photographic process of the 1880s, and they capture the crowded, display-filled character of these temporary halls. The fair also gave Paris the Eiffel Tower, completed for the occasion.
