The Suez Canal Company built its own pavilion at the Exposition Universelle of 1889, the Paris fair held on the Champ de Mars and the Trocadéro grounds, to showcase the waterway it had opened to shipping in 1869. The fair marked the centenary of the French Revolution and drew millions of visitors, and national and corporate pavilions competed for attention alongside the newly completed Eiffel Tower. Albumen prints were the standard photographic medium of the 1880s, so the picture also documents the exhibition architecture of the period.
