Few of the buildings that went up for the 1889 Exposition universelle were devoted to a single art form, which makes this pavilion of the Society of French Pastel Artists unusual. The fair opened on the Champ de Mars in May 1889 to mark the centennial of the French Revolution, and it drew millions of visitors to its exhibition halls and temporary pavilions. Pastel, a drawing medium of powdered pigment pressed into paper, had a loyal following among French artists of the period, and the society used its own building to show work in that tradition. The albumen print, a process widely used in the 1880s, preserves the pavilion's architecture and the crowds around it.
