A gas-themed pavilion stands out among the buildings recorded at the Exposition Universelle of 1889, the Paris world's fair held to mark the centennial of the French Revolution. Gas companies used such structures to show visitors what the fuel could do, from street lighting to cooking and heating in homes and workshops. The albumen printing process used here was the standard photographic method of the 1880s and captures the fair's architecture in fine detail. The exposition drew millions of visitors, and the Eiffel Tower built for it remains its best-known legacy.
