A pavilion given over to the press sets this picture apart from the many halls of the 1889 Paris Exposition Universelle, most of which showcased manufactures, machinery, and the arts. The exposition, held to mark the centennial of the French Revolution, drew large crowds to the Champ de Mars and is remembered above all for the Eiffel Tower rising nearby. Albumen prints like this one were the standard photographic medium of the 1880s, just as gelatin methods were coming into wider use, so the picture also preserves how exhibition architecture looked at the time.
