Few views of the 1889 Exposition universelle in Paris show the fair's commercial entertainments as plainly as this one, which places a Turkish tobacco pavilion beside the Folies Parisiennes. The exposition marked the centennial of the French Revolution, and the Eiffel Tower became its signature landmark, but the grounds also held a looser mix of reconstructed foreign streets, cafés and music halls aimed at visitors who wanted amusement as much as instruction. Albumen prints such as this one were the common way scenes like these reached the public in the 1880s.
