Argentina's pavilion stood among the national exhibits at the Exposition Universelle of 1889 in Paris, a fair that marked the centennial of the French Revolution and drew millions of visitors to the Champ de Mars and nearby grounds. The fair showcased industrial machinery, colonial displays and the newly built Eiffel Tower, and many countries used their own buildings to present their trade, agriculture and national identity to a European audience. Albumen prints like this one, made in the 1880s, were a common way to record such structures, and they now serve as a useful visual record of how nations represented themselves at the great world's fairs of the late nineteenth century.
