At the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris, a French colonial blockhouse stood in the Senegalese Village, one of the reconstructed settlements that let visitors see distant colonies up close. Such fortified posts were a familiar feature of French rule in West Africa, where forts and garrisons anchored trade and military control. The fair, held to mark the centennial of the French Revolution and remembered for the Eiffel Tower, drew large crowds, and its colonial displays presented empire as a source of national pride. This albumen print, made in the 1880s, preserves a view of that staged colonial landscape.
