Few attractions at the 1889 Exposition Universelle drew as much curiosity as the Javanese village, a reconstructed settlement where workers went about daily tasks in a street built to resemble one in the Dutch East Indies. This albumen print records that street and the people working in it, showing how the fair staged colonial life for paying visitors. The Exposition marked the centennial of the French Revolution, and its displays were a major part of the event alongside the newly built Eiffel Tower. Photographs like this one are a useful record of how such fairs presented other cultures to European audiences.
