At the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris, a man stands beside a pousse-pousse, the two-wheeled chair pulled by a runner that was a common form of transport in Vietnam. The fair's Tonkin Village was one of several colonial displays meant to show visitors life in France's new Indochinese territories, which the country had gained control of in the 1880s. The albumen print captures how these reconstructed exhibits presented colonial subjects to European audiences as curiosities, and the fair's grand scale, including the newly built Eiffel Tower, shaped how such scenes were seen and recorded.
