Few views of the 1889 Paris Exposition pair a nude man and nude woman as a single figure group, and this one is titled for the Age of Iron, a standard theme in nineteenth-century sculpture drawn from the classical idea of successive ages of humanity. The exposition, held to mark the centennial of the French Revolution, filled the Champ de Mars with pavilions, machinery halls and sculpture, and the Eiffel Tower served as its entrance. Albumen prints like this one were the dominant photographic process of the 1880s, and they preserved fine tonal detail in stone and bronze, making them a useful record of how the fair's art was displayed.
