The fountain in this view, known as the Fontaine Coutan, stands at the Exposition Universelle of 1889, which filled the Champ de Mars and the surrounding grounds with pavilions, gardens and water displays. The fair marked the centennial of the French Revolution and drew millions of visitors, and it is remembered mainly for the Eiffel Tower, built as its entrance landmark. Albumen prints like this one, made during the 1880s, were a common way to record such grand public spectacles, and they show how exhibition architecture and ornamental water features were meant to impress crowds.
