The Gallery of Machines was the great hall of the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris, and this view catches it before the displays were complete, with machinery still being moved into position. The building, designed by Ferdinand Dutert and Victor Contamin, used a huge span of steel arches to enclose the floor without interior supports, a feat that drew wide attention at the time. The photograph is attributed to Napoleon Dufeu and comes from the collection of Albert Tissandier, an aeronaut and illustrator who documented the fair. Its unfinished state makes it a useful record of how the exhibition was assembled.
