The Gallery of Machines was among the largest halls at the 1889 Paris Exposition Universelle, and this view records its interior, filled with the heavy engines and industrial equipment that gave the building its name. Engineers Ferdinand Dutert and Victor Contamin designed it around a steel arch spanning more than 100 meters, a feat that drew attention from engineers worldwide. The fair marked the centennial of the French Revolution and also introduced the Eiffel Tower, which stood nearby. Albumen prints were the standard photographic process of the 1880s, so this image reflects the look of documentary photography from that decade.
