The picture shows the grand vestibule of the Gallery of Machines at the Exposition Universelle of 1889 in Paris, with the fountain by sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, who later designed the Statue of Liberty, as its centerpiece. The Gallery of Machines was a vast iron-and-glass hall built for the fair, and the fountain in its entrance space reflected the exposition's effort to pair industrial engineering with monumental art. Albumen prints like this one, made in the 1880s, were the standard way to record such exhibitions for visitors and the public.
