The Gallery of Machines was the vast steel-and-glass hall at the heart of the Exposition Universelle of 1889 in Paris, and this albumen print shows its interior filled with working engines and industrial equipment rather than the exhibition's more decorative displays. The fair was built to mark the centennial of the French Revolution, and its machinery hall drew engineers and visitors eager to see the latest in steam and power technology. The Gallery's enormous span, held up by the same engineering that gave the Eiffel Tower its fame, was itself a showpiece of the era. Albumen prints like this one were the standard photographic method of the 1880s, so the image also records the look of the period's exhibition photography.
