Few things at the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris drew as much attention as the colonial villages, and this albumen print records a group of workers from one of them, a Javanese village built on the fairgrounds. The fair, held to mark the centennial of the French Revolution, was staged alongside the newly completed Eiffel Tower and showed off France's overseas empire through reconstructed settlements where people from the colonies lived, worked, and performed for crowds. Photographs like this one were sold as souvenirs and now serve as evidence of how colonial subjects were displayed to European audiences. The title's use of the word "Native" reflects the racial framing of that display.
